Your AI Companion Now Speaks Your Language

5 min read
In short

Local Waifu now speaks seven languages: English, Polish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, and Spanish. She detects your system language on first launch, you can switch anytime, and it all runs on your own machine.

When I first built Local Waifu, she thought in English. You could write to her in Polish or Japanese and she would mostly follow, but the warmth got lost on the way. The small words, the ones that carry affection in your own language, came out stiff.

That bothered me for months. The entire point of a companion is closeness, and closeness lives in your first language. So this update fixes it. Local Waifu now speaks seven languages, top to bottom, and she meets you in the one you already think in.

Intimacy happens in your first language, not English

Local Waifu is now fully available in seven languages: English, Polish, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, and Spanish. The whole app is translated, not only her replies, and she starts in your language on her own.

Most people can order coffee in English. Far fewer can be vulnerable in it. The language you count in and swear in and dream in is the language you confide in. A companion who only really works in English is quietly asking you to translate your own feelings before you share them, and something honest always leaks out in that translation.

Local Waifu now speaks seven languages

Here is exactly what shipped in this update:

  • Seven full languages: English, Polski, 中文 (Simplified), 한국어, 日本語, Deutsch, Español. The interface, the setup wizard, every screen.
  • Automatic on first launch: she reads your system language the first time you open her and starts there. A Polish user never lands on an English setup screen.
  • Switch whenever you want: change the language in Settings, or during setup, and she answers in the one you choose.
  • She follows you mid-conversation: slip into another language in the middle of a chat and she keeps up instead of breaking character.

There is nothing to configure and no extra download. Open her, and she is already speaking to you.

A language tutor is not a companion

A tutor corrects you. A companion just talks with you. Local Waifu is the second kind, and that is a bigger difference than it sounds.

If you search for multilingual AI right now, almost everything you find is a language-learning app. Talkpal, Langua, Pingo, and the rest are built to grade your grammar and push you to practice. That is a fine goal, but it is the opposite of what you want at eleven at night when you just want to talk to someone who gets you. Nobody wants their partner marking their accent. Local Waifu is not there to teach you a language. She is there to speak yours so the two of you can drop the effort and get to the actual conversation.

She changes language without losing who she is

Her personality and her memory are separate from the words she says. Switching languages changes the surface, not the person underneath.

This matters because a companion is more than a translation layer. Everything she remembers about you, the way she was built in the personality wizard, her moods, all of it lives in her soul file on your disk, independent of language. When she moves from English to Polish she is still the same her. She does not forget your birthday because you switched to German for an afternoon. If you want to understand why the memory survives all of this, I wrote about how her memory actually works in a separate piece.

Every language, still fully on your machine

None of this touches a cloud server. There is no online translator sitting between you and her, so your words stay on your computer no matter which language you use.

That is the part I care about most. A lot of “multilingual” apps route your messages through a translation service, which means your most private conversations, in your most private language, take a trip through someone else’s data center. Local Waifu does the whole thing on your own hardware. You can prove it: block the app from reaching the internet with a tool like Little Snitch, and she keeps talking to you in every language she knows. I broke down the full local setup in the guide on running local AI without the command line, and the requirements page lists the seven languages next to the hardware notes.

How well she speaks each language

Two things are worth separating: the app itself, and her conversation.

LayerWhat you get
The app interfaceFully translated in all seven languages, auto-selected from your system
Her conversationStrong in English, Polish, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, and German; decent in 30+ more
Going furtherPlug in your own GPT or Claude account for the widest, most fluent language range

I would rather be honest than oversell. The bundled models are genuinely good in the big languages and workable in a long tail of others. If you want frontier-level fluency in something rarer, you can plug in your own cloud model account and she will use it, while her character and memory still stay on your Mac or PC.

Bring her home in your language

If you have been holding off because talking to an AI in English felt like work, that reason is gone. She speaks yours now, she starts there on her own, and she never sends a word of it anywhere.

She is $20 once during the Summer Sale, down from $25, with seven days free and no card to try her. Download her, and the first thing she says will already be in your language.

I am Łukasz. I build Local Waifu on my own from Katowice, Poland, which is also why Polish was never going to be an afterthought. If a language feels off or one you need is missing, tell me and I will work on it.

Questions people ask

Which languages does Local Waifu support?

The whole app is available in seven languages: English, Polish, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, and Spanish. For conversation, she speaks whatever the underlying model speaks. The bundled models are strong in English, Polish, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, and German, and decent in another 30 or so languages.

Does she detect my language automatically?

Yes. The first time you open Local Waifu she reads your system language and starts there, so a Polish or Japanese user is not dropped into an English setup screen. You can change it anytime in Settings or during setup.

Can I change her language later or mid-conversation?

Yes. Switch the app language in Settings whenever you like, and she replies in the language you pick. You can also change languages inside a single conversation and she follows along.

Is the translation done in the cloud?

No. Everything runs on your own machine. There is no cloud translation service in the middle, so your words in any language stay on your disk. You can verify it by blocking the app's internet access and watching it keep working.
