What Mac do I need?
Apple Silicon (M1 or newer), macOS 13+. 16 GB RAM recommended for the balanced model tier (qwen3.5:9b). 32+ GB unlocks the premium tier (qwen3.6:27b).
Does it run on Windows?
Yes. There's a Windows version for Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. 8 GB RAM works, 16 GB or more is recommended. A graphics card makes her respond faster, and the app detects and uses it on its own, no setup. The Windows download is larger (~800 MB) because it brings everything she needs to run on your PC, with nothing else to install. Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt the first time: click More info, then Run anyway.
What if my computer is too old or too weak to run the local AI?
You can still run her. Instead of the local model, paste your own cloud API key in Settings → Models and Local Waifu uses that provider for her replies, so there are no real hardware requirements beyond an internet connection. Curated picks are GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Sonnet 4.6, DeepSeek V4 Flash, and Gemini, with DeepSeek the cheapest way in. Her memory and personality still live on your device, only the words she speaks come from the cloud, and your key never touches our servers.
Which models are bundled?
Local Waifu auto-installs one chat model based on your Mac's RAM (Gemma 4 E4B on 8–18 GB, Qwen 3.5 9B on 19–34 GB, Qwen 3.6 27B on 35–56 GB, Qwen 3.6 35B on 57 GB+). nomic-embed-text is required for memory recall and installs in the background. Llama 4 Scout (MoE) is also in the catalog. You can swap, add, or remove any model in Settings → Models.
Can I use GPT-5.5 or Claude?
Yes. Settings → Models, then paste your account key. Curated cloud picks: GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Sonnet 4.6, DeepSeek V4 Flash, and Gemini. The key never touches our servers. Local Waifu calls the provider directly.
Isn't this just a wrapper around Ollama?
No. The bundled AI engine is one layer. Local Waifu adds persistent self-learning memory, the personality wizard, encrypted character files, OS integration (calendar, reminders, messages), and a native macOS UI that doesn't require a terminal. Setting that up by hand is a full weekend's work. $20 buys you the weekend back.
Will my Mac get hot or drain the battery?
The AI runs on your Mac's GPU, so it's efficient. Much closer to a video call than to a game. On 16+ GB Macs running the Balanced tier, expect normal fans during a long conversation. The model frees up memory when you close the app. You can also pause and stay in the chat history at any time.
Can I have multiple characters at once?
Yes. Build as many as you want, switch any time, keep each one's memory and mood separate. Export each as an encrypted soul file. Back her up to a USB drive, move her to a new Mac, archive her. They're yours.
Can she draw pictures or send selfies?
Yes. Ask for any picture, a dragon, a landscape, the two of you, and she draws it right in the chat. Selfies too, matching how you built her. It works with a local image model you install in Settings → Image Models, or through your own cloud image account if you add a key. Included with the app, no extra subscription.
What languages does she speak?
The app interface is available in seven languages: English, Polish, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, and Spanish. It picks your system language automatically on first launch. For conversation, she speaks whatever the underlying model speaks: the bundled Qwen and Gemma models are strong in English, Polish, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, French, and German, and decent in another 30+ languages. You can switch language mid-conversation, and plugging in a cloud model like GPT or Claude unlocks broader language quality.
