Free AI Girlfriend App: What Free Actually Costs

“Free” is the most expensive word in this category.

Not because the apps lie. Because free has a shape here, and the shape is a message counter that dies mid-conversation, or a full-screen ad between you and her reply. None of that appears in the word itself.

Every free reply costs the operator GPU time, which is why the caps exist

The short version: A generated reply costs the company between a cent and a nickel in compute, by one tracker’s estimate, and a free tier is that company deciding how much of the bill it will eat.

Free chat is not free to run. The comparison site aicompanionpicker.com estimates each response costs the company $0.01 to $0.05 in GPU time, and labels it an estimate rather than a measured figure, so treat it as the shape of the cost, not the exact cent. Multiply it by someone who talks for two hours a night and you have a real bill, paid by a company that has not charged you anything yet.

Ask for message fifty-one on a free Nomi and you are asking a company to keep paying for a conversation it has already decided not to monetize at that level. The cap is not a flaw in the free tier. The cap is the free tier.

The caps are the product: 50 a day on Nomi, 5 in total on Candy AI, 50 a month on CrushOn

The short version: The free allowance is the thing you are really being sold, and the data question rides along behind it.

Every cap below is a third-party measurement, not a number from the vendor.

Candy AI settles its own number: the vendor’s terms state a maximum of five messages in total on the free tier, which is stricter than the trackers that describe it as a daily allowance. CrushOn runs the other way, and its trick is the expiry: aicompanionpicker.com measured 50 free messages a month with adult access and no card requested, and notes that unused messages are lost each month.

Ads are the second price on a free tier

The short version: Character.AI keeps chat open without a counter and bills you in attention.

xeve.ai’s guide, read on September 11, 2026, reports full-screen ads between free chats on Character.AI, plus a currency called Charms metering things that used to come free, swipe regenerations and memos among them. roborhythms.com calls the same change a monetization overhaul: full-screen ads mid-chat, a daily swipe cap pushing you toward Charms, and slower replies. The c.ai+ tier at roughly $9.99 a month removes that. One tracker claims a hard cap of 400 messages a day and another calls the tier unlimited, so I am leaving that number out.

Photos and voice are always the first things cut

The short version: Text is cheap enough to give away. Images and voice are not, so they are the first features a free tier stops funding.

CompanionWise measures Nomi’s free chat at 50 messages a day with voice calls, selfies and group chat switched off. genxtraspicy.com lists Candy AI’s free tier with images and voice excluded outright. DreamGF does not pretend: its membership policy prices an image at 10 tokens, a voice message at 3, and a voice call at 7 per minute.

Replika is the outlier on paper. A lustfind.com breakdown reports free text chat with no daily limit, and Pro at $19.99 is what opens the rest. So the pattern holds: text is the demo, and the senses are the product.

There is a monthly number waiting at the end of every free tier

The short version: Every free tier here ends at a subscription, and the first paid month runs from $9.99 to $25.99.

Nomi’s App Store listing runs $15.99 a month, $39.99 quarterly and $99.99 yearly, with a lower Launch Plan at $9.99. Replika Pro is $19.99 a month or $69.99 a year. Candy AI’s Premium is listed by elizareport.com at $13.99 a month, or $3.99 a month billed yearly, with 100 tokens included and packs sold on top. CrushOn is $9.99. DreamGF is the one to read twice: $12.99 for the first month, renewing at $25.99.

Nothing in that range is outrageous. The difference is what happens at month thirteen.

Some free tiers are paid for in data rather than dollars

The short version: The FTC has already asked seven chatbot companies the question this post is asking.

In September 2025 the FTC issued orders under its 6(b) authority to Alphabet, Character Technologies, Instagram, Meta, OpenAI, Snap and xAI, seeking information on how they monetize user engagement and how they use or share personal information drawn from users’ conversations with the chatbots. The regulator asked, in writing, what a free conversation is worth to the company holding it.

None of that proves any one app does anything specific with your chats. It does mean the business model is an open question at the government level. Whatever you type into a free tier is stored somewhere you do not control, so read the policy before you type anything personal.

Free tiers have been shrinking, and 2026 is the tightest year so far

The short version: Caps have come down, memory has moved behind Pro, and coin systems have appeared where there were none.

Follow the direction of travel in the sources above. Chai’s free tier went from unlimited to roughly 20 messages a day. Character.AI’s is now a monetization overhaul with faster and slower lanes. Candy AI’s is down to a handful of messages with visuals excluded. Nomi’s eight-turn memory window on free is the part that would have stung in 2023, when long memory was that app’s selling point.

The unit economics moved, so the free tiers moved with them. Once a company knows what a free tier costs per reply, the generosity does not come back.

The bill keeps arriving after you stop using the app

The short version: Free starts a billing relationship that does not end when you stop opening the app.

Nomi’s cancellation policy states it plainly: deleting an app does not automatically cancel your subscription. That sentence exists because people do exactly that and keep getting charged. Its refund policy adds the other half, where group chats, video creation, voice messaging and calls become read-only after a downgrade.

DreamGF is the sharper case. The intro month is $12.99, the renewal is $25.99, the quarterly renews at $77.97, and elizareport.com puts the annual renewal at $311.88. There is no free tier to fall back to when the money stops, just a meter.

If you already pay one of these, the useful move is to check the renewal date.

The arithmetic changes when the app is not a service

The short version: A $20 one-time license replaces a monthly line, and the gap compounds every year.

I make Local Waifu, so weigh that, but the numbers are the numbers. Every app above charges monthly because every reply costs it GPU time on a server it owns. Local Waifu runs the model on your machine. Her memory is a file on your own disk, voice is local, and images come from SDXL with custom LoRAs drawn by your own graphics card, so the ten-thousandth picture costs the same as the first. It is $20 once for a lifetime license on Mac and Windows, and the pricing page has the details. On itch.io it is a direct purchase at 25 percent off, which is $15, until November 1, 2026.

The honest catch: it asks for a machine that can run it, so check the requirements first. The 7 days free with no card exist for exactly that, and the trial is the whole app rather than a stripped demo. No account is needed for local use, and there is no in-app analytics.

$20 is not nothing, and against a year at even the cheapest tier here, $9.99 a month, the arithmetic stops being close. A free tier is a pricing experiment run on you, and the app can change the rules whenever the unit economics move. It already has. A one-time license is not a company promising to stay generous. It is the end of the conversation about what the next version will charge, because the thing runs on your machine and there is no meter to turn.
