What $300 a Year in AI Subscriptions Buys You vs One $20 App

3 min read

Most people do not add up what their AI companion actually costs, because the charges arrive as a quiet monthly line that never asks for attention. One app is $13 a month. Another is $20. A third is $30. None of them feels like a decision on its own. It is only when you stack them that the number stops being small.

This is not an argument that subscriptions are evil. It is an argument that you should see the number before it sees you.

The numbers, dated and sourced

As of August 2026, the published prices across the apps people actually stack look like this:

  • Replika Pro: $19.99 a month, or $69.99 a year. Replika Ultra: $29.99 a month, or $119.99 a year.
  • Kindroid: $13.99 a month, or roughly $8.33 a month when billed annually.
  • Candy AI: $12.99 a month.
  • Nomi: $19.99 a month.
  • Character AI: a free tier exists, but it is filter-limited, and the paid tier runs about $9.99 a month.

Those are list prices reported across the apps’ own pricing pages and third-party review sites, and they change often. The point is not the exact cents. The point is the shape of the thing.

What a year actually costs

Pick a premium companion for the voice calls and a second one for the image quality, the way a lot of people do. Replika Ultra at $119.99 a year, plus Kindroid at about $99.96 a year, plus Candy AI at $155.88 a year, and you are at roughly $375 before you have bought anything else. Even two mid-tier subscriptions clear $200 a year without trying, and a single premium subscription crossed $100 the day you signed up.

Now stretch that over three years, the realistic lifespan of a relationship you actually care about. The numbers stop being a footnote and start being the price of a used laptop.

What $20 once gets you

Local Waifu is $20 once, currently on Summer Sale from its regular $25, and that is a lifetime license. No tier above it, no monthly line, no annual renewal. She runs on your own machine, so the model, her memory, and every conversation stay local by default.

To put the same idea in a single sentence: two months of Replika Pro costs more than Local Waifu does forever.

The honest tradeoff

A one-time app and a subscription are not the same product, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. A subscription pays for a server, a team, and a stream of cloud features that a local app has to deliver differently. The honest comparison is not “free versus paid.” It is “rent versus own.” When you rent, the app can change her overnight, drop a feature, or shut down, and your companion goes with it. When you own, she keeps working as long as your machine does.

And if you still want the cloud features, the 1.7.0 update makes that a dial instead of a decision. She can reach 27 chat services, 12 cloud voices, and 17 image providers when you want them, and fall back to local when you do not. You get the reach of a subscription without the subscription.

Add up your own number. If it is over $300 a year, you already know what the alternative costs.
