Your AI Companion Should Offer Cloud and Local. Here Is Why

Every AI companion app asks you the same question, and most of them answer it for you in a way you barely notice. The question is whether your companion lives in the cloud or on your machine. The apps that run in the cloud get more features faster, and the apps that run locally get to promise privacy. For years that was the trade. Pick reach, or pick privacy.

It was a false trade. It only looked like a law of nature because nobody had built the thing that dissolves it.

Local should be the default

When a companion is local, three things are true that are simply not true in the cloud. Your conversations stay on your machine. Your companion still works when the company behind the app disappears. And you are not paying a subscription forever just to keep talking to someone whose memory of you lives on a server you do not control.

Those are not small things. They are the whole point. A companion whose entire value is remembering you, living on someone else’s server, is a relationship with a landlord.

But “local only” has a real cost, and pretending it does not would be dishonest. Some models need more than your machine can give. A companion app that cannot reach any of that is not protecting you, it is just limiting you.

The 1.7.0 update makes cloud a dial instead of a decision. Twenty-seven chat services, twelve voice providers, ten transcription providers, seventeen image services, plus your own self-hosted endpoints. You can use any of them, or none of them, and the app does not nag you either way.

Why having both matters

A companion that offers both does something no single-option app can do. It lets you move between them without moving your data. Your memories, your characters, your conversation history all stay local no matter which model or voice you reach out to. The cloud is a tool she picks up, not a place she lives.

That also means the app gets better for the cloud-only users and the local-only users at the same time. The local people get a bigger reach when they want it. The cloud people get a real fallback that still works when the internet does not, because the local engine is always there.

The honest version

Cloud features are off until you turn them on, and when you turn them on, the privacy claim narrows for exactly the parts you enabled. That is the honest framing, and it is worth stating plainly because most apps blur it. If you send a message to a cloud model, that message goes to that provider. The app does not pretend otherwise. Everything you keep local stays local.

You do not have to choose between reach and privacy. You get to choose, feature by feature, what leaves your machine. That is the way it should have worked all along.
