Local AI Companion: Choose One That Fits Your Life

8 min read
In short

Choose a local AI companion by the conversation you want and the setup work you can tolerate. Check hardware and each feature's data path, then test ordinary chat, restart persistence and offline behavior before committing.

A local AI companion runs its conversation model on your computer, rather than requiring a hosted model for every reply. That can suit an unhurried evening: a lamp beside the sofa, your laptop open, a conversation you can return to without sending its text to a cloud model. But the label alone does not tell you how much work stands between installing the app and settling in.

I build Local Waifu, a Mac and Windows companion with a local model and locally saved conversations and memories. It is one concrete option if you want a dedicated companion app rather than assembling an interface and backend yourself. That is my bias, stated early. This guide helps you choose a setup that fits your life, not declare my app the winner.

Start with the evening you want to have

The short version: Decide what a comfortable conversation needs before choosing a model or comparing features.

Picture opening the app after a tiring day. Do you want to type a few thoughts and receive a thoughtful reply? Or is speaking aloud the reason you are looking for a companion? Those are different starting points. An acceptable text setup can still disappoint if local voice needs a model your computer cannot comfortably run.

Write one sentence that describes success: “I want quiet text chat on this laptop, with my conversation saved when I close it.” Add a boundary if needed: “Conversation content must not go to a hosted model.” That gives you a useful filter without demanding every feature at once.

Then decide how much maintenance belongs in that evening. Someone who enjoys changing model settings may find the DIY route rewarding. Someone who wants to close work tabs and talk should count configuration time as a cost. Neither preference is a lack of technical ability.

An AI companion is software, not a human relationship or a promise of emotional care. Choose the tone you enjoy, while keeping ordinary human support in your life.

Choose a setup route instead of an app ranking

The short version: A dedicated app and a DIY interface solve different setup problems; hybrid use is a separate privacy choice.

Use this table to narrow your route. It describes reader needs, not test results or guarantees about every product in a category.

What matters in your eveningRoute to investigateEvidence to require before committing
I want a dedicated companion without wiring separate programs togetherA packaged local companion such as Local WaifuSupported device, model setup instructions and a usable trial
Choosing backends is part of the funA DIY interface and local model backendBackend documentation and a connection you understand
Conversation content must stay off hosted modelsLocal text with cloud routing disabledOffline instructions, fallback settings and your own disconnected test
I accept remote processing for selected featuresA deliberately configured hybrid setupWhich provider receives each feature’s data and its billing terms
Voice matters more than typingA route with documented local voice supportEngine and language requirements, then a test on your device

SillyTavern’s official documentation makes an important distinction: it is an interface and requires a separate LLM backend for inference. It supports both local and cloud backends. Its free, open-source interface does not make a hosted backend free, or make an arbitrary configuration offline.

An API connection can point to a model server on your own computer. “API” does not automatically mean cloud. Ask where the backend runs and who maintains it. With a DIY stack, that responsibility may be yours; choose it because you want the control, not because an app list called it universally better.

Define privacy for each feature you will use

The short version: Local text does not establish the data path for voice, images or a configured cloud fallback.

For Local Waifu, local conversations and memories are stored on your computer. Optional cloud models use your provider account and send the context used for replies to that provider. A local database can therefore coexist with remote processing. Saved history is not proof that the conversation never leaves the device.

For private offline text, finish model downloads and any required activation first. Enable Offline Mode, and avoid saving cloud fallback keys. Selecting a local model alone is insufficient: configured keys can permit a cloud fallback when the local backend cannot be reached. Offline Mode blocks cloud routing; it is not a system-wide firewall for downloads or activation.

Check voice and images independently before using them with personal content. Optional cloud voice sends text to a provider, and image configurations can also involve external services. If offline use is a firm boundary, start with text and add media only after establishing its local path.

Local storage also differs from encryption. Do not assume every chat file is encrypted because an app stores it locally. On a shared computer, consider who can access your user account and backups. The local-processing explainer gives further context; verify the settings of your installed version rather than relying on a broad label.

Let your current computer set the starting point

The short version: Begin with a supported text model; treat voice and images as additional hardware decisions.

Check the Local Waifu requirements before downloading. The published Mac requirements specify Apple Silicon and macOS 13 or later, with 16 GB recommended and lighter-model use possible at 8 GB. Windows requirements specify Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. These chat requirements do not promise every image or voice model will work.

Model files require downloads and disk space. Larger models are not automatically the better evening companion if replies arrive too slowly for you. Local Waifu selects a model for the hardware, but your tolerance for waiting still matters.

Test on the computer where you intend to relax, not a more powerful machine you rarely use. Notice fan noise and whether you keep switching away while waiting. A technically successful reply can still be a poor fit for your routine.

Give the first evening explicit acceptance tests

The short version: Test your own definition of success with harmless content before entrusting the app with private conversation.

The following checklist proposes tests for you to run. It is not a report of tests performed for this article. Complete setup first, following the guide; do not confuse a pending model download with failed offline inference.

  1. Write your acceptance rule. For example: “Text works without networking, the chat survives a restart, and waiting does not interrupt my evening.” Choose your own acceptable delay rather than adopting an invented benchmark.
  2. Try an ordinary exchange. Discuss a fictional afternoon or a book. Follow up naturally. Record whether replies stay relevant and whether the tone feels comfortable. A clever opening message alone is weak evidence.
  3. Test a conversational boundary. Say, “Please keep this conversation gentle and avoid pet names.” Observe whether later replies respect that preference. Note failures rather than explaining them away.
  4. Separate saving from recall. Give a harmless invented preference, such as choosing mint tea. Close and reopen the app. Check whether the conversation remains, then ask about the preference. Saved history and successful recall are two different observations; neither proves perfect future memory.
  5. Try disconnected text. After required setup and activation, enable Offline Mode, avoid saved cloud fallback keys and disconnect networking. Send a fresh message, then restart and try again. If it fails, keep personal content out while you investigate the installed configuration.
  6. Test media separately, if essential. Try the voice language you actually use or request an image only after checking its provider path. Log whether it works offline and whether your hardware supports it. Working text is not a media pass.
  7. Find the exit route. Locate documented backup, export or deletion controls for the edition you installed. Check what each includes. If you cannot find an essential control, mark it unresolved and ask before committing.

Keep brief notes: pass, fail or unresolved, with the reason. A disconnected conversation demonstrates that tested path can work offline; it does not audit all network behavior or prove that every future setting is private.

Commit only when the ordinary evening feels right

The short version: Pay for a fit you have checked, with setup and optional service costs understood.

Local Waifu’s direct edition offers a seven-day trial without a card. Continued use after the trial requires an active license. The standard price is $20 once, with updates included while shipped; check pricing for exact terms. Optional external API services have separate bills and data policies, not an unlimited allowance included in that purchase.

If avoiding repeat feature charges matters, use the in-app-purchase decision guide alongside your notes. Choose the route whose ordinary conversation passed your requirements. A quiet text-only evening is enough if that is what you wanted.

Questions people ask

Is a locally installed AI companion automatically offline?

No. A desktop interface can use a cloud backend. Check where text inference runs and examine voice, images and fallback settings separately. Initial model downloads and license activation are separate from offline conversation.

Can an API connection still be local?

Yes. An API can connect an interface to a model server on your own computer. The backend's location matters, not the presence of the word API. SillyTavern supports both local and cloud backends.

Does local memory mean the companion remembers everything?

No. Local Waifu stores conversation history and memories on your computer, but the model uses selected context within technical limits. Persistent storage does not guarantee perfect recall or an infinite context window.

How should I try Local Waifu for private offline chat?

Finish setup and model downloads, enable Offline Mode and avoid saved cloud fallback keys. Test with networking disconnected after any required activation. The direct edition offers a seven-day trial without a card; continued use then requires an active license.
