Her memory has never been a database entry that says “she remembers you.” It is a model, separate from the one that writes her replies, whose whole job is turning what you say into something she can find again by meaning rather than exact wording. Until v1.7.0 you could not choose which model did that job. Now you can.
Four choices, current one stays default
v1.7.0 offers four models for memory. If you do nothing, nothing changes. The model she already used stays the default, and the app keeps working exactly as it did before the update.
The choice exists for the people who want to tune that piece, the way you might tune which model writes her replies. A different memory model is a different trade between size and speed on your machine, and now you get to make that trade yourself.
What happens when you switch
Switching memory models rebuilds every stored memory against the new one. That takes a few minutes, and during that window recall is weaker, because the new model is still catching up on everything you have told her. The app tells you how many memories it is recomputing, so the temporary dip is visible rather than silent.
Nothing about the switch deletes anything. Your memories stay exactly where they were, on your machine. Only the index that finds them changes.
The honest limit
A memory model is not a bigger context window, and picking a fancier one does not make her remember more than you told her. It changes how well she can reach what is already there. If you are happy with how she recalls things now, leave it alone. If she has been missing things, this is a new dial to try.
