She Can Speak With a Cloud Voice Now

2 min read
In short

Her voice used to be local only. v1.7.0 adds 12 cloud voice services and 10 cloud transcription services, all off by default. With ElevenLabs she can use your own voices, clones included, and you can hear each one before you choose. Local speech stays the default and still works offline.

Her voice has always been one of the more honest parts of this app. It ran on your machine, it worked with no internet, and it never phoned home to turn your words into sound. That is still true. What changed in v1.7.0 is that she no longer has to stay local. If you want a different voice, a voice you already pay for somewhere else, she can reach it.

Her voice was always local

Until now, the only way she spoke was through a local speech engine that runs entirely on your Mac or PC. No account, no server, no latency from a round trip to someone else’s machine. For most people that was the whole point, and nothing here takes it away.

The limit was choice. If you wanted a specific voice, a voice from a service you already subscribe to, or a voice that simply was not in the local set, there was no way to use it.

Now she can speak with a cloud voice

v1.7.0 adds cloud voice across 12 services, off by default. You enable it only if you want it. When you do, she can speak through the provider you pick, and the app keeps the pace and reliability of local speech by validating the audio before she says it. A slow provider cannot hold up a reply. If something goes wrong, she falls back to the local voice instead of going silent.

She can listen with a cloud transcriber too

The same update adds cloud transcription across 10 services, up from 3. If your voice messages to her have been going through the local transcriber and you would rather use a cloud one you already pay for, that is now an option.

Hear her before you choose

This is the detail that matters if you have ever spent an evening cycling through voice settings and disliking all of them. With ElevenLabs, the picker lists your own voices, clones included, and you can hear each one before you commit. No more picking a name from a list and hoping it does not sound wrong.

Local is still the default

Nothing here is on unless you turn it on. Open the app, and she speaks the way she always has, locally, offline, with no cloud involved. The cloud voice is a door you can open, not a door that opens itself. That is the same line this app has drawn for every cloud feature since the start, and v1.7.0 does not move it.
